NIPT Test – What is it and what can you expect?
Pregnancy after IVF is an incredible joy. At the same time, it’s important to know that such pregnancies are considered more delicate, especially during the first trimester. That’s why doctors often recommend extra check-ups to make sure everything is going smoothly and to give you peace of mind.
One of these important check-ups is the Non-Invasive Prenatal Test (NIPT). It’s a simple, safe, and very reliable test that can detect possible chromosomal changes in your baby with more than 99% accuracy.
From as early as the 10th week of pregnancy, NIPT can look at your baby’s DNA through a small blood sample taken from the mother and screen for conditions such as:
- Down syndrome (T21)
- Edwards syndrome (T18)
- Patau syndrome (T13)
- Sex chromosome differences
At GGRC, the test is done following European standards, and every result is carefully reviewed together with our genetic specialist.
Who is NIPT recommended for?
- Any pregnant woman who wants extra reassurance;
- Women over 35;
- IVF pregnancies;
- Families with a history of genetic conditions;
The best part is that NIPT is completely safe for both you and your baby. It only requires a small blood draw from the mother – no risk at all for the pregnancy.
That’s why so many parents choose NIPT: it provides early and accurate information without the risks that come with invasive procedures.
It’s also important to know that NIPT is a screening test, not a diagnosis. If the result shows a higher risk, it simply means there is a greater chance of a condition being present. To be sure, further diagnostic tests may be recommended.
What happens after you get your NIPT results?
- If the test shows a higher risk, your doctor may suggest additional tests such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS) to confirm.
- If the result is normal, you usually don’t need further testing, unless another concern comes up.
